What do I do if I detect a counterfeit document?

Write your initials on the back of the bill. Try to detain the person who passed the bill and call the police. On a separate piece of paper write down a description of the person as well as any other witnesses. If possible, try to get the license number of the car the person was driving.
- Place the bill on the light table with the President's portrait facing upward. A bright blue paper color is the first counterfeit currency indicator.
- Next, look for the colored security thread. The appropriate positions for each color security thread are indicated on the front of the light table.

- $100 - Red and to the left of the President's picture
- $50 - Yellow and to the right of the President's picture
- $20 - Green and to the left of the President's picture
- $10 - Orange and to the right of the President's picture
- $5 - Blue and to the left of the President's picture
- After checking for the security thread, press down on the light table to turn on the platform light. New U.S. currencies (post 1996) contain watermarks. On U.S. currency, the watermark is the same as the Presidential image on that particular bill and appears to the right of the portrait.
